Fitness Street Samui

If you’ve been researching fitness retreats on Koh Samui, you’ve probably come across the name “Fitness Street.” It sounds made up. Like something a marketing person invented. But it’s a real place — a stretch of road in Lamai where, over the past fifteen-odd years, a cluster of gyms, wellness centres, healthy cafés and training facilities have quietly set up shop next to each other. And Lamai Fitness Retreat sits right in the middle of it.

Where it is and what it looks like

Fitness Street runs off the main ring road in southern Lamai, heading towards the coast. It’s not flashy. There’s no big sign at the entrance saying “Welcome to Fitness Street.” It’s a regular Koh Samui road — palm trees, a few dogs sleeping in the shade, the odd motorbike buzzing past. But look at what’s actually on it and you’ll see why the name stuck.

Within a couple of hundred metres you’ve got multiple gyms, a Muay Thai training area with a proper ring, our dedicated Hyrox outdoor training centre, a yoga and breathwork studio, healthy food spots, massage shops, and a spa with a swimming pool, sauna, steam room and plunge pools. It’s not planned — it just evolved that way over the years as more fitness-focused businesses set up near each other. Now it’s reached a tipping point where the whole strip has its own identity.

What a typical morning looks like

Dawn’s barely broken and people are already moving. Runners heading out along the coast road or cutting inland towards the mountains. A few early birds warming up outside the gym. Someone doing pull-ups on the outdoor rig while their coffee cools down on a wall nearby.

By 7am the first classes are running. You’ll hear pads being hit in the Muay Thai area. Music coming from the gym. A yoga class starting in the studio. The café’s open and there’s a queue for morning coffees and protein shakes. It’s got this energy to it — not aggressive or competitive, just a lot of people doing something good for themselves before most tourists have even woken up.

That carries on all day. There’s always something happening. Sessions in the morning, a quieter spell around midday when people eat and recover, then it picks up again in the afternoon with strength classes and the 5:30pm Hyrox sessions. By evening it’s wound down. People are eating, stretching, heading to the beach for sunset. It has a rhythm to it that you fall into pretty quickly.

Lamai Fitness Retreat on the street

We’re the biggest operation on Fitness Street and we’ve been here the longest. Our facilities take up a fair chunk of the strip — two fully equipped gyms, the Hyrox outdoor training centre, a multi-purpose studio for yoga, breathwork and wellness classes, a dedicated Muay Thai floor space with a boxing ring, and our on-site café called EATS.

Everything flows together. You walk out of a strength session, grab a shake from the café, cross the road for an ice bath at the spa, and you’re back for your next class without ever getting in a car. That’s the beauty of how it’s all set up. Nothing’s more than a couple of minutes’ walk from anything else.

Our accommodation is right here too. The apartments are literally on Fitness Street — private bedroom and bathroom, kitchen, desk, air conditioning, balcony. Roll out of bed and you’re at the gym in two minutes. The hotel option is about four minutes’ walk. Both come with free access to the LUMMA Spa and its pool.

What else is nearby

Lamai Beach is about five minutes on foot. Crystal Bay — smaller, quieter, brilliant for snorkelling — is roughly the same distance in the other direction. Both are spots we use for morning beach walks and running sessions.

The town of Lamai is close by. It’s the second biggest beach town on Koh Samui after Chaweng, but it’s calmer and less chaotic. Plenty of restaurants if you want to eat out — Thai food, international stuff, seafood places right on the beach. Coffee shops everywhere. A couple of decent bars for the evenings if you fancy it, though most of our guests are happily asleep by 10pm.

For bigger trips, the island’s main shopping centre Central Festival is about 20 minutes north. There are pharmacies, hospitals, 7-Elevens on every corner, and a Lotus’s supermarket if you need to stock up on anything. You’re on an island but you’re not in the middle of nowhere.

Getting into the interior

This is the bit that surprises most people. Fitness Street sits on the coastal plain, but just behind us the terrain rises sharply into jungle-covered mountains. The only cross-island road starts a few hundred metres from the retreat — about 15 kilometres of winding tarmac that climbs up through the hills and drops down to Maenam on the north coast. Cyclists love it. Runners use it for hill training. Even walking it is spectacular.

We do a regular Buddha Hike — a steep climb up to a viewpoint that rewards you with one of the best panoramas on the island. Our running coach Pikey holds the record for it. He’ll take you up at whatever pace works for you, and by the time you’re standing at the top watching the sun come up over the Gulf of Thailand, you’ll understand why people keep coming back here.

The community

What makes Fitness Street work isn’t really the facilities. You can find good gyms and nice cafés all over Koh Samui. It’s the fact that everyone around you is there for the same reason. The bloke eating breakfast next to you just finished a 6am run. The woman in the pool did a Hyrox session yesterday and can barely lift her arms. The couple at the next table are three weeks into a weight loss programme and visibly buzzing about their progress.

It creates this atmosphere where training is just the default. You don’t have to motivate yourself because the environment does it for you. Back home, going to the gym requires willpower. Here, it requires more willpower to skip a session than to show up. That’s the Fitness Street effect, and it’s probably the single biggest reason our guests get the results they do.
