There are a lot of fitness camps on Koh Samui. Some are great, most are average, and a few are basically just a hotel gym with a timetable pinned to the wall. So how do you tell the difference? And more importantly, how do you find the one that’s actually going to work for you?
We’ve been running Lamai Fitness Retreat for over 15 years. In that time we’ve trained thousands of people — complete beginners, ex-athletes, people in their twenties, people in their sixties, folks who haven’t exercised in a decade, and folks who train five days a week at home but want something more. The one thing they all have in common? They came here because they wanted a proper reset, not just a sweaty holiday.
What makes a fitness camp worth your time
A good fitness camp isn’t about smashing yourself into the ground for a week and crawling onto the plane home. That’s a bootcamp, and honestly, it doesn’t work for most people. You get sore, you get tired, you might pick up an injury, and three weeks later you’re back to your old routine with nothing to show for it except a dodgy knee.
What actually works is structure. A proper weekly schedule that balances hard sessions with lighter ones. Strength days mixed with conditioning, mobility work, yoga, and enough recovery time that your body can actually adapt. That’s what we do here. Every week is planned so you can push yourself without falling apart.
It starts before your first session
When you arrive, we don’t just throw you into a class and hope for the best. You’ll sit down with one of our coaches for a proper assessment. We’ll talk about your goals, your training history, any injuries or health issues, and what you actually enjoy doing. Some people love running. Others would rather do anything else. Some want to build strength. Others want to drop a few kilos. Knowing this stuff upfront means we can point you towards the right sessions from day one.
We check in with you throughout your stay too. If something’s not working, we adjust it. If you’re flying and want to push harder, we’ll help with that. It’s not a rigid programme that ignores how you’re actually feeling — it’s a plan that moves with you.
What a typical day looks like
Most mornings kick off around 7am. You might start with a beach run, a jungle hike up to the Buddha viewpoint, or a Muay Thai session. After that it’s breakfast, a breather, and then a mid-morning class — could be HIIT, Tabata, yoga, or stretch and mobility, depending on the day.
Afternoons are a bit more relaxed. Some people book personal training sessions. Others use the time for recovery — the pool, a massage, the ice baths, or just putting their feet up. Then there’s usually an afternoon strength session and an evening class to finish the day. You don’t have to do everything. Your coach will help you figure out the right balance so you’re getting results without running yourself into the ground.
Weekends are lighter. Saturday has a morning session and some optional activities. Sundays are for recovery and exploring the island — boat trips to nearby islands, snorkelling, or just wandering around Lamai and finding a good coffee.
The coaching makes the difference
You can find gym equipment anywhere. What you can’t find everywhere is coaching that actually pays attention to you. Our team is led by Billy Orr, who founded the retreat and has competed in ten Ironman events, coached on The Biggest Loser Asia, and recently qualified for the Hyrox World Championships. He’s built a team around him that shares the same approach — know your stuff, care about the person in front of you, and don’t cut corners.
You’ve got Laura on weight loss and Hyrox coaching, Pikey who’s the fastest runner on the island and will have you enjoying running even if you currently hate it, Jordan with over 30 years in Muay Thai, Seal on yoga, and Andy on swimming and breathwork. Every session is coached properly. Nobody’s left in the corner trying to figure it out alone.
You need to eat properly too
Training hard and eating rubbish is like filling a sports car with cooking oil. It doesn’t matter how good the engine is if the fuel’s wrong. Our on-site café serves clean, balanced meals — lean protein, fresh vegetables, whole-food carbs, and none of the processed stuff that makes you feel sluggish.
Portions are designed to fuel your training, not leave you starving or overfull. If you’re on a weight loss package, meals are included and tailored to your goals. If you’re on the fitness package, you can add meals on or eat at the brilliant local restaurants in Lamai. Either way, we’ll help you understand what your body actually needs and how to keep it up when you get home.
Recovery isn’t optional
This is where a lot of fitness camps fall short. They’ll hammer you with sessions all day and then wonder why you’re limping by Thursday. We build recovery into the schedule because it’s not a luxury — it’s what lets you train consistently across your whole stay.
We’ve got ice baths, a swimming pool, sauna and steam rooms, spa treatments, and massage. Physiotherapy is available for anyone carrying injuries or niggles. Yoga and breathwork sessions double as active recovery. It all adds up. You’ll train harder because you recover better, and you’ll go home feeling strong rather than broken.
The setting doesn’t hurt either
Let’s be honest — it’s easier to get out of bed for a 7am session when it’s 28 degrees and you can see palm trees from your window. Koh Samui’s weather is warm all year round, which makes outdoor training comfortable rather than miserable. You’re running on beaches, hiking through jungle, and cooling off in the sea. It’s a long way from a grey Tuesday morning in a car park.
We’re based on Fitness Street in Lamai, which is exactly what it sounds like — a strip of gyms, healthy cafés, and wellness spots all within walking distance. The beach is five minutes away. The apartments and hotel we use for accommodation are two to four minutes from the gym. Everything’s close, everything’s easy, and there’s nothing to distract you from what you came here to do.
Who comes here
Everyone, genuinely. We get solo travellers in their thirties who want a fitness-focused holiday instead of a week on the beer. We get couples who want to do something active together. We get people over 50 who want proper coaching that respects their body. We get digital nomads who are already on the island and want some structure. And we get people who are starting completely from scratch and have no idea where to begin.
All classes are scaled to your level, so you’re never out of your depth. The person next to you might be lifting twice what you are, and that’s fine. Nobody’s judging. Everyone’s here for their own reasons and the atmosphere reflects that — supportive, friendly, and focused.
How long should you come for
That depends on what you want to achieve. A week or two is enough to reset your habits, learn some new techniques, and get a serious boost in energy and motivation. Three to four weeks is where you’ll start seeing real physical changes — more strength, better fitness, visible differences in how you look and feel. Some people stay longer. Some come back every year.
Be wary of anywhere that promises dramatic results in a few days. Real progress takes time, consistency, and good coaching. We’d rather you leave after two weeks with habits that last a lifetime than leave after four weeks and fall straight back into old patterns.
